Pastors vs Coaches/Therapists

Jun 11, 2025

Dear Pastor, Therapy Is Not a Threat to Your Anointing

There’s a quiet war in the body of Christ today.

A war between the pulpit and the couch.

Between the altar and the clinic.

Between revelation and research.

Some pastors(not all) are teaching against therapy and coaching…

Not because it’s unbiblical,

But because it makes some of them feel less powerful when a member gets better without a laying on of hands.

But I ask you, dear shepherd:

What if the power was never yours to hoard,

But God’s to distribute through the body?

Jesus didn’t just raise the dead.

He sat with the woman at the well and used what in our days we can call talk therapy to break her walls.

He made mud and applied it to a blind man’s eyes—

Not because He needed to—

But because God often uses what we understand to open us to what we can’t.

Even the cross looked like foolishness to the religious.

But it was God’s greatest tool of healing.

I’ve had the honour of helping churches across Africa, North America and Europe  set up Family Life Ministries—

Not just prayer points, but data-driven support systems, coaching models, trauma care, marriage frameworks, and mental wellness tracks.

And the transformation has been divine.

But I’ve also heard the whispers from pulpits…

"Therapy is worldly."

"Coaching is psychological."

As if God didn’t give man the mind that discovers truth.

As if wisdom and the Spirit were enemies.

Here Are 3 Divine Benefits of Embracing Professionals in the Church:

  1. Holistic Care for God’s People

We are not just spirit—we are spirit, soul, and body.

Therapists and coaches help shepherd the soul, where trauma hides and bondage breeds.

When we embrace them, healing becomes complete.

  1. Strengthened Ministry Capacity

Pastor, you are not called to do everything.

Even Moses needed Jethro to restructure his ministry.

Utilizing trained professionals reduces burnout and ensures every member gets the attention they deserve—with excellence and accuracy.

  1. Manifestation of the Full Body of Christ

When we silence the therapist, we mute the eye.

When we shut out the coach, we paralyze the hand.

Every part has its grace.

The church becomes whole when every gift is activated—not just the one behind the pulpit.

Beloved Pastor,

Your anointing is not in competition with therapy—

It is amplified by it.

Your members don’t need a miracle every Sunday.

Sometimes, they just need a safe space to cry.

A tool to understand themselves.

A strategy to rebuild their broken marriage.

Let the prophets prophesy.

Let the coaches coach.

Let the therapists guide.

Let Jesus be glorified.

This is not rebellion. This is restoration.

It is time for the Church to become the safest hospital on earth—spiritually and emotionally.

You are not less powerful when others rise.
